A BIG change!We are preparing to dive into the unknown, which Roulotte will pay the price for and perhaps us too. Indeed, after our trip to Norway, it became clear to us that traveling with a caravan, even a small and narrow one, raised many difficulties and proved to be relatively physical in the long run.To remedy this, we considered a completely new way of traveling around the world while taking care of ourselves.It was during a visit to Montélimar last month, at the adventure vehicle show (SVA), that the idea clicked. Traveling shorter, lighter, more compact, going almost everywhere on lost paths and tracks, now seems essential to us, even if we had to sacrifice our comfort to achieve this in exchange for greater freedom of movement and decision-making.Also, the sale of our Duster 4x4 and the Caravan is the price to pay to finance a 4x4 pick-up with a bed in which we will build a homemade wooden "cell". We visited the Memorial of the Armistice of the First World War, in the clearing of Rethondes, with the famous wagon.What a misery... When you think that twenty years later they did it again, it makes you despair of the human race.We plan to visit the medieval site of Guédelon by tomorrow or the day after, we will see.-----------------Published on 08/29/2024D- 77 17:30 a.m. After visiting the Operation Dynamo museum in Dunkirk, a very moving visit dedicated to the retreat of the Allied troops caught in the Dunkirk pocket from 26/05/1940 to 04/06/1940, we went for a walk in the pretty little town of Bergues, where some scenes from the film "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" were filmed. We were there not because of this film but because the town itself, its Vauban-style ramparts and its rich history were worth it!We did it again with the same perspective for the town of Gravelines and were not disappointed.We definitely have a lot to discover in France and have decided to dedicate our future summer season there rather than running off to see elsewhere (and very far away!) if it is better...Tomorrow we will visit the city of Lille and its famous central square.-----------------Published on 08/25/2024D- 73 19:30 a.m. Back home, here we are at a campsite in the northernmost town in France. Do you know it?Bray-Dunes, that's its name.The weather is superb, which is a change from the rain in Denmark, which we only left the day before yesterday. Today's stage was the longest of our entire journey, with a total of 550km, mainly on the motorway. I wanted to do it on a Sunday to take advantage of the absence of trucks, which are usually immobilized on that day in Europe.Tomorrow, we're going to visit the town of Bergues, and maybe Dunkirk. We went for a short hike last night where, thanks to a panoramic viewpoint, we were able to realize how gigantic this lake is, almost an inland sea.While visiting the museum not far away, we had the chance to chat with a young Swedish couple who had the task of mowing a meadow with an old animal-drawn cutting bar. Really interesting to see how the old people worked without noise, without smell, without pollution, with nature and not against it!-----------------Published on 08/09/2024D- 57 18:50 a.m. After 50 days spent traveling through southern Norway, here we are at a campsite in Sweden with the immediate prospect of sharing an aperitif with traveling friends that we met on a mountain spot a year ago.The weather is really not giving us any gifts, even here, but it seems that it will improve... We are on the Atlantic coast but the sea wind is so strong that it is unthinkable to go fishing.Tomorrow, we will visit the Tanum site where Bronze Age petroglyphs abound. Let's hope the weather will be better!-----------------Published on 08/08/2024D- 56 11:30 a.m. And here we are, our journey in Norway is over since we are going to spend our last night in this country, in a campsite very close to the Swedish border, on the edge of a lake, with the forest around us as is often the case here except in the north.So... Norway?A magnificent country, sometimes with terrible weather and countless voracious mosquitoes!Roads, in the fjord area, very narrow, even dangerous; road signs, both vertical and horizontal, deplorable, especially in rural areas; tolls galore, roads closed without warning; a uniform globalization of housing that prohibits any form of terroir or originality; a US colony in many ways, etc.But it is also easy and dreamy spots by going off the beaten track; relaxed people, sometimes friendly and smiling; the absence of theft, queue jumping, mean dogs; the cleanliness of the places except in the big cities; the enhancement of rural and family heritage; wide open spaces; free movement in nature.-----------------Published on 08/02/2024D- 50 5:30 p.m. Oops! Already a week without news, how time flies when the sun is out ;-)So what can I say? The Haugesund spot was fabulous. I caught 2 pollack and a garfish there which were all delicious.The next day we went to visit a Viking village plus an exhibition and then took road n°42 and joined Norwegian friends near Arendal where we spent two very nice days.As all good things must come to an end, we got back on the road to visit the old port of Arendal (very pretty!), eat an ice cream, yes, yes, an ice cream because the sun was still with us. Then it was off to the extreme southern tip of Norway, to Lindesnes, with its lighthouse battered by the winds all year round.Here we are now along road 44, on a spot "in the green", and we will visit the surroundings tomorrow, as long as the weather is good.-----------------Published on 07/26/2024D- 43 5:30 p.m. Here we are not far from Haugesund, "in the green", on the edge of a fjord where I will go fishing in the evening. We owe our knowledge of this great spot to a Norwegian man whose house we got lost at earlier by following a tiny road that ended at his house!Yesterday, in Skånevik, we took advantage of the services of the harbor master's office to do laundry and take good showers. Unfortunately, their dryers were not very efficient so we got our clothes back still very damp, and as the day was punctuated by many showers (not to be confused with that!), it has remained so until now. Now, it is drying between two clearings and we are on our guard at the slightest drop of rain.-----------------Published on 07/24/2024D- 41 4:30 p.m. After traveling 177km yesterday to discover the surroundings of Odda, we stayed today on our bivouac, quietly, in the SUN!We take the opportunity to do laundry by hand, hoping that by this evening the laundry will be dry, but it's not a sure thing...This morning, I went fishing for mackerel but without success, whereas the day before yesterday, in the same fjord, I caught a nice whiting whose flesh was tasty. During this exercise, I met another fisherman, a very friendly Czech, who turned out to be our bivouac neighbor with his wife and two children. We have just visited Bergen, the rainiest city in Norway, under a clear and warm sun, since at the time of writing these lines, it is 27°C at our bivouac 20km from the ancient Hanseatic city .We left in the middle of the afternoon, when the port was crowded, and a concert by the American star Bruce Springsteen will be given this evening.This evening, we will finally be able to take our first solar shower in our D4L outdoor cabin. No, we are not pigs since Roulotte is also equipped with a bathroom that we use every day…Marie even had the audacity to wear a dress and me Bermuda shorts, but these little summer crazes will end tomorrow according to the weather!-----------------Published on 07/18/2024D- 35 6:30 p.m. We left our bivouac in Skjolden around 9 a.m. this morning, without even knowing where we would go that day, relying on the weather. Good weather, direction mountains; rain, direction the Atlantic coast.Finally, despite the gloomy weather, we opted for the mountains and are currently bivouac at around 1300m altitude which in Norway is equivalent to something like 2400m in France.Beneath our feet, intense traffic teems for Bergen via the 25km tunnel, the longest in the world, which we were careful not to take!Tomorrow, a dizzying descent awaits us to reach the village of Aurland, on the edge of the fjord. The rain has returned...But no matter, we enjoyed a magnificent day yesterday which allowed us to discover historic route 258.Today we went to the Geiranger fjord which was initially under a thick maritime mist. Not ideal for photos.This evening, we remain on our bivouac "in the green" at 1000m altitude, and under a few showers, to go back down tomorrow to Lom where we do not know what awaits us, except that the weather forecast announces a week of bad weather.In 31 days, we count four days of sunshine, twenty of rain and the rest gloomy. It's not easy to work on panoramic shots in these conditions.-----------------Published on 07/12/2024J-29 6:00 p.m. FINALLY! He arrived!!! The sun, yes, the sun, since 1 p.m. today. What a joy to feel its gentle rays caressing our spine between two gusts of wind...And with the sun, the sky finally clears blue and allows us to admire the surrounding peaks overlooking the fjords. Because we follow the Atlantic coast and favor very small roads.
