Palacio de la Aljafería

11th century fortress, built during the Muslim occupation. After the Reconquista, it became the home of the Catholic kings, before being a prison during the Inquisition, a barracks and, more recently, the Parliament of the Autonomous Community of Aragon.
The Mudejar style has become typical of Spain, an architectural reference of great finesse which is the fruit of the cultural cohabitation of Jews, Muslims and Christians.

Historical Center

Zaragoza, known in Roman times as "Caesaraugusta", was founded by the Roman emperor Augustus in 14 BC on an ancient Celtiberian city, "Salduie". Falling under the control of the Moors in the 8th century, the city became a taifa in 1018 and, after the Reconquista in the 12th century, an important cultural and economic center where Mudejar art developed.

After dark periods, including the Napoleonic Wars (1808-1809) and the Civil War (1936-1939), the city was able to rebuild and develop. Today, in the emblematic Plaza del Pilar, around the Fuente de la Hispanidad, the links between Spain and the countries of Latin America are celebrated every year on October 12.
