Steps for moving the floor of the cell for 4x4 xtra-cab pick-up

This page describes the steps of building a chestnut wood and okoume nautical plywood cell for two adults, in the bed of an Isuzu 4x4 pick-up. This construction is inspired by the many examples that can be found in video on the Internet, including American, Canadian, Swiss and Japanese videos. It is made by amateurs. The steps are classified by #00, #01, #02, etc. below.

Laying the floor...

Published on : 03/02/2025

In the video below, I check and put in place the posts and crosspieces that make up the structure of the door.

Note that I have planned to embed carpenter's fittings at the base of the floor in order to be sure of good solidarity between the elements when it is necessary to lift the cell using the crutches when we want to put it in the garage for example.

In the following image, I have installed the fittings and Marie applies tung oil to the parts that will not receive the insulation.

Their role is to reinforce the resistance to tearing when the cell has to be lifted to release the pick-up. The plates are screwed with A2 stainless steel screws and each receive a 8 mm through bolt.

The posts and crosspieces have a section of 110 x 36 mm.

The next video shows Marie applying tung oil to the parts that don't have the insulation to stick to.

The door frame measures 52cm x 125cm. Needless to say, we're not about to give up our diet to go through it! Flexibility exercises as a bonus!

First video of the move. This attempt will end in failure. Indeed, having presumed my strength, I try to lift the structure (there I succeed, not for long!), but when I try to move it, it is a total failure!

Second attempt, but in duo this time, and what a duo! Little by little, like ants, we move the structure to a flat location where we can turn it around in order to present it facing the pick-up to load it.

After an intense "brainstorming", the U-turn operation is carried out without too much trouble except that my pants seat is the victim ;-).

When turning the key in the pickup to approach, no lights are displayed! The battery is flat... impossible to start. Why?
At first, I blamed the winter cold, then I remembered that I had left the doors open or ajar for hours several times. Could it be just this simple red light on the dashboard that comes on when a door is opened? I guess so because the cold alone would not have been enough in my opinion.

Still, we realize that if we had locked the pickup, we would have been unable to open the driver's door and therefore unlock the hood in order to put the pliers in to start!
We are not ready to forget the lesson...

It's time to put the structure on the back of the pick-up, but this is not done without a little fright when we have to remove the hand truck!

During all these operations, we are forced to leave the pick-up engine running because it would be impossible to restart it given the state of the battery.

The time has finally come to hoist the structure into the dumper. To do this, I tied a rope to the Duster's hitch and to a six-pulley block, which reduces the pulling effort by six.

Marie will be in charge of pulling on this rope. After an initial unsuccessful attempt due to faulty lashing, the operation goes smoothly, even though Marie suggests playing Tarzan and Jane by doing this job using only our arms!

A close-up of the six-pulley block that I made myself about twenty-five years ago and that has given me countless services. I should have changed the rope since then...

In fact, in the next episode, this block will slide on a zip-line cable fixed between two oaks, and will allow us to lift the structure to remove it from the skip so that we can work on the ground.

In the next episode, after having made various measurements and checks of the VroumVroum! when it is placed in the dumpster, we will move the pick-up between two trees and, using a homemade system, we will lift the structure out of the dumpster so that we can continue working from the ground, all without any effort this time!
So see you soon ;-)
